If they replaced the arcade with the Pro, and dropped the price of the elite, then more people would continue as they do now to buy the pro - only for $100(or whatever the difference it) less.
However, by replacing the pro with the elite instead, more people will continue to buy the elite(at the Pro's price) over the arcade ... which means, more people will have elites and more people will effectively continue to pay $100 MORE than had microsoft opted for the above idea.

It's simple maths ... PS3 might have better this or better that, but at teh end of the day it doesn't shift games.
Developers aren't in it for the kudos ... they're in it for the money ....
dropped the arcade and made the pro the same price as the arcade they will lose money.
But, if they they do what they're doing, more people will buy the elite just as more peeople buy the arcade now ...

Seriously, 360 is a HUGE success. Anyone can see that. It's got it's problems but it's done way better than expected, and is the number one HD console on the market. M$ said at the start the NEVER instended to win this round, just improve on the last and eat into some of sony's hold on the market ... well for all concerned they've exceeded expectations so much that Sony have been forced to keep last gen's ps2 going because it's doing a damn sight ...
what's more likely to happen with this article though is that IF people are insterested as you say about the cheaper slim, they're unlikely to be buying the PS3 now ... ? That's what I would do?
So, if the numbers are good as the article suggests then it probably means you're wrong and now one is waiting for the slim ... ... they'll get a £100 cheaper xbox elite now that it's coming down in price too
